A most difficult read

A few years ago, I set about to read as many of the classics as I could. I think so many of us talk about how much we love them without really being honest about reading them.
This book was difficult at best to get through. The premise of the story is brilliant and we all are pretty familiar with it from TV, movies, cartoon and even abridged children's books. At least the first part that is.
Gulliver's time in Lilliput is a fantasy we would all enjoy to be real. A community of six inch people. Heck even the giants that Gulliver encounters in Brobdingnag would be exciting. And really this is the most exciting section of the book. When Swift wrote it, it was highly popular satire of the political climate of the day. Unfortunately that doesn't translate well to today and the middle sections of the book become difficult to follow at times. It does get interesting again when he goes to the Land of the Houyhnhnms, a location of highly intelligent talking horses.
I do recommend people read it due to its status as one of the great novels of all time, but please understand that the middle sections are going to drag on for a bit and can be hard to follow. A companion reader for the novel would be helpful.
